“Singjamei Meepham” public meeting reaffirms to preserve Meitei rituals and traditions

A public meeting titled “Singjamei Meepham” was held today at Oinam Thingel Lairembi Lampak to discuss the implementation of decisions taken during the August 10, 2024 public meeting at the City Convention Centre, aimed at preventing the degradation of Meitei rituals and traditions.
The meeting was jointly organised by EC Oinam Thingel, SEDO Sapam Leikai, YAWA Leishangthem Leikai, OLYC Okram Leikai, NLCTL Ningthoujam Leikai, SDO Mayengbam Leikai, WVSD Waikhom Leikai, WAC Waikhom Leikai, SUO Top Leikai, SROY Thongam Leikai, and NAC Thongam Leikai of Singjamei district.
Participants agreed to implement the August 10, 2024 decisions at the village and Leikai level through active participation of clubs, organisations, and Meira Paibis. Key resolutions included safeguarding traditional Meitei rituals and customs from birth to death, avoiding the blending of traditional practices with modern or external influences, and curbing excessive expenditure on weddings.
Specific measures outlined were to limit practices such as Awunpot, Phijang erection, and other costly marriage-related rituals. The meeting also called for the avoidance of activities such as cake cutting, ring exchanges, photo sessions, alcohol consumption, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, and encouraged the use of traditional attire during marriages.
