A delegation of Tangkhul Naga residents from Sinakeithei Village Authority in Ukhrul district today met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at his official residence and urged the government to immediately strengthen security arrangements in the area amid continuing fear over armed attacks and instability.
The delegation, accompanied by Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah of the Naga People’s Front, demanded the deployment of state police forces, particularly the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), in Sinakeithei village to ensure the safety of civilians.
Raising concern over the prevailing security situation, the villagers stated that repeated attacks by armed groups in recent months had created an atmosphere of fear, insecurity and distress among residents. They urged the government to provide permanent security cover to prevent further violence and protect innocent civilians.
The delegation also sought adequate manpower for the Sinakeithei police station and demanded the proper functioning of the existing Sub-Divisional Collector’s office in the area. Stressing the hardships faced by residents, the villagers appealed for humanitarian assistance and the supply of essential commodities.
The Village Authority further requested security deployment along the road stretch between Mahadev and Sinakeithei village, stating that movement in the area remained risky due to security concerns. They also called for better healthcare facilities and accelerated developmental works in the region.
Responding to the demands, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh stated that disarming all forms of illegal firearms across Manipur had become an urgent necessity for restoring normalcy in the state.
He said peace remained the only viable solution to the prolonged conflict and urged community leaders to guide youths away from violence and towards reconciliation and stability. Referring to late South African leader Nelson Mandela, the Chief Minister said enduring peace could only be achieved through dialogue and collective efforts despite deep divisions and violence.
Khemchand Singh also stated that the government was attempting to create employment opportunities outside the government sector through skill development programmes aimed at empowering youths.
