Sinakeithei sounds alarm over “Militant Bunkerization” in Lungter Range, demands immediate State action

Special Correspondent
Ukhrul, March 25:
The Sinakeithei Village Authority has issued a strong and sharply worded condemnation over the alleged presence and activities of armed Kuki militants in the Lungter Range, accusing them of illegally constructing fortified bunkers and creating a climate of fear and insecurity in the region.
In a press statement released on Wednesday, the Authority described the developments as a serious threat to civilian life, movement, and agricultural activities of the villagers. It alleged that the bunkers are being built under the pretext of providing protection to a road and purported coordination with central security forces, but in reality serve as instruments of intimidation and territorial assertion.
Terming the actions as “a blatant breakdown of law and order,” the Village Authority stated that the construction of fortified positions and the presence of armed elements on civilian land amount to criminal intimidation, unlawful occupation, and militarization, none of which can be justified under any legal framework.
The Authority categorically asserted its exclusive ownership over the Lungter Range, including the road in question, emphasizing that the road was constructed with prior approval of the Village Assembly in accordance with customary laws and traditional governance. It maintained that such permission remains conditional and can be revoked if misused for hostile or unlawful purposes.
Rejecting any attempt by external groups or authorities to assert control over the area, the statement underscored that such actions directly infringe upon the customary land rights and peaceful possession of the Sinakeithei community.
Particularly alarming, the Authority noted, is the involvement of armed groups operating under Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangements. It pointed out that the establishment of bunkers and armed deployment beyond designated camps is a clear violation of SoO ground rules, which strictly prohibit movement with weapons and territorial expansion outside notified zones.
The Village Authority has called upon the State Government and security agencies to immediately clarify their position on the matter, dismantle all íåçàêîííî constructed bunkers, prevent further encroachment, and ensure strict enforcement of the rule of law.
While reaffirming its commitment to peace and communal harmony, the Authority warned that it would be compelled to take necessary measures to protect its land, rights, and people if the situation remains unaddressed.
