Imphal, Feb 12:

Shops and business establishments in Singjamei area remained closed today as traders protested against alleged extortion demands imposed upon them.
Placards with messages such as “Singjamei Bazar da Leiriba Dukan Singda Puba Thangba Ngamladoiba Senkhai Lakpa Yaningde” and “Awabada Awaba Hapiganu, Dekan Famlibasinggi Awaba Khangbiyu” were seen on the shutters of closed shops.
According to shopkeepers, the monetary demands were made by unidentified armed groups, causing fear and distress among traders. They have appealed for an end to such intimidation, urging authorities to ensure a secure business environment.
It may be noted that the Government of Manipur has announced the establishment of an integrated Anti-Extortion Cell under the Home Department to curb extortion activities targeting civilians, government employees, and others. The cell includes representatives from Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, Central Armed Police Forces, and the Army. A toll-free helpline, reportedly operational 24/7, has also been launched to assist victims of extortion.
