Activist Irom Sharmila was produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate at the Patiala House Court in Delhi today in connection with a case of attempted suicide over her fast-unto-death at Jantar Mantar in Delhi in 2006. The Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal East, has granted permission for her appearance in the court. She has been on fast since November 4, 2000, demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.Ms. Sharmila has been appearing periodically in the court in this connection. When she was released here in 2006, she went to Delhi, catching the police and intelligence agencies napping. She continued her fast at Jantar Mantar. The Delhi Police arrested her and charged her with attempt to commit suicide. By regulations, Ms. Sharmila will be accompanied by three medical workers, two policewomen and two prison officials. Officials say the State exchequer spend about Rs. 3 lakh on air tickets and other expenses for the visit.
