Imphal, Feb 11:
Senior journalist Yambem Laba, who is also a former member of the Manipur Human Rights Commission, was abducted from his residence at Uripok Yambem Leikai in Imphal West district at around 3:30 am today by an unidentified armed group.
A few hours after his abduction, Laba was paraded at an undisclosed location in Imphal West district, where he made a confessional statement before the media. In his statement, he expressed regret over his previous remarks regarding the UNLF led by Pambei, which had signed a ceasefire agreement with the government.
“I have demeaned an armed rebel group (UNLF led by Pambei) who have signed a ceasefire agreement with the government, terming them as surrendering to the government. I am sorry, and my statement was not correct. I also said that on October 2, Pambei-led UNLF cadres forced me to delete a Facebook post. I am sorry to have used the name of UNLF led by Pambei,” he stated.
Earlier, Laba’s wife recounted that around 20 to 30 armed individuals stormed into their residence, forcibly entered his room, and took him away under duress.
Following his public apology, Yambem Laba was later released safely by the armed group.
