Imphal, April 5:
BJP’s North East in-charge Sambit Patra arrived in Imphal today on a two-day visit, as political uncertainty continues in Manipur under President’s Rule. His visit comes amid renewed calls for the formation of a popular government in the state.
Soon after landing, Patra took a helicopter to Churachandpur, where he met local MLA Vungzagin Valte. He returned to Imphal around 1 p.m. and proceeded directly to the residence of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh for discussions.
At Imphal Airport, Patra was received by BJP Manipur General Secretary K. Sarat Kumar. Later in the day, he also held a meeting with Manipur Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata. After the meetings, Patra checked into Hotel Imphal, where he is scheduled to stay for the night.
It remains uncertain whether he will engage with the group of 21 MLAs who recently submitted a memorandum to the Centre, pressing for the formation of a new government.
The memorandum, submitted to both the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Home Affairs on April 29, was signed by 13 BJP legislators, three from the National People’s Party (NPP), three from the Naga People’s Front (NPF), and two independents.
In their joint statement, the MLAs asserted: “We feel that the installation of a popular government is the only means to bring peace and normalcy in Manipur.”
President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The state assembly, though placed under suspended animation, is scheduled to continue its term until 2027.
This is Patra’s first visit to Manipur since February. His presence is being closely watched amid mounting political pressure for a return to democratic governance in the conflict-affected state.
