RPF calls for observance of Martyrs’ Day on April 13

The proscribed Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) has called upon the people of Manipur to observe “Athoubasinggi  Numit” (Martyrs’ Day) on April 13, paying homage to those who lost their lives in the course of the armed movement.
In a statement issued by Roben Khuman, Deputy Secretary (Publicity) of the outfit, the RPF, along with its armed wing, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), paid tribute to what it described as martyrs who had sacrificed their lives for the cause of Manipur.
The statement also conveyed condolences to civilians, including women and children, who have lost their lives amid the prolonged conflict, and expressed solidarity with bereaved families.
Highlighting the historical significance of April 13, the RPF referred to the 1982 Kodompokpi incident as a turning point in the movement, stating that the sacrifices made during that period continue to inspire subsequent generations. It claimed that members of the PLA have continued the movement without retreat since its inception.
The outfit further stated that since 1990, the observance of April 13 has been carried out collectively by sections of the public, and appealed for unity among the people in commemorating the day by paying homage at memorial sites.
The statement alleged that many cadres and civilians have been killed, injured, imprisoned, or subjected to hardships over the years amid the ongoing conflict, adding that such experiences have caused widespread distress among the population.
Reiterating its position, the RPF claimed that the sacrifices of those killed are tied to what it termed as a struggle for self-determination. It maintained that such sacrifices would continue to guide the movement.
The outfit also asserted that those who participated in the armed movement did so voluntarily and described them as symbols of dedication and commitment to their cause.
Calling for observance of the day, the RPF urged people to pay floral tributes at memorial sites and light lamps at their homes on the evening of April 13. It also appealed to the public to refrain from organising entertainment programmes, feasts, or celebrations on the day, and instead observe it with solemnity.
