RIMS performs first Bentall procedure

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, has successfully performed the first-ever Bentall procedure in Manipur, marking a major milestone in advanced cardiac care in the state.

The complex open-heart surgery was conducted on June 18 on a patient suffering from severe aortic valve regurgitation along with dilatation of the aortic root and ascending aorta. The patient has recovered well and is currently in satisfactory condition.

The procedure, which involves replacement of the aortic valve, aortic root and ascending aorta, was carried out by the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) team led by Prof. Thokchom Chito and the Cardiac Anaesthesia team headed by Prof. L. Pradipkumar under the guidance of Prof. Shyamkumar Thingnam, former Head of the Department of CTVS at PGI Chandigarh.

RIMS also achieved another milestone during the same week by successfully performing its first Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery. The institute stated that the CTVS department has been expanding advanced cardiac care services through heart valve replacement and congenital cardiac surgeries.

The Director of RIMS congratulated the surgeons, anaesthetists, perfusionists, nurses and support staff, stating that the achievement reflects the institute’s growing capability to provide specialised cardiac treatment within the state, reducing the need for patients to seek such care outside Manipur.
