RIMS students meet Governor over prolonged agitation, demand Director’s removal

The ongoing unrest at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, took a new turn today as a group of agitating students called on the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, at Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum demanding the removal of the Director of the institute.
The students’ delegation highlighted a series of unresolved grievances, which they allege have severely impacted the academic environment and student welfare at RIMS. The agitation, which has been building over recent weeks, has seen repeated protests, sit-ins, and symbolic demonstrations by students who claim administrative failure and lack of transparency under the current Director’s leadership.
During the meeting, Governor Bhalla gave the student representatives a patient hearing and assured them that their concerns would be taken seriously. He reaffirmed that the safety, academic interests, and overall welfare of the student community remain a top priority.
“The issues raised will be reviewed thoroughly in consultation with the relevant authorities,” the Governor reportedly told the delegation, while appealing to the students to maintain peace and focus on their studies.
He further assured that appropriate action would be taken following due process, suggesting that the matter may now be under active consideration at the highest levels.
The agitation by RIMS students has drawn increasing public attention in recent days, with calls from student bodies and civil society groups urging a resolution to the crisis. The administration, however, has yet to issue a formal statement addressing the core demands raised by the students, including the call for the Director’s removal.
Meanwhile, classes and clinical activities at RIMS have been partially disrupted due to the ongoing protests. The students have maintained that their agitation will continue until concrete action is taken.
The meeting with the Governor is being seen as a significant step in the ongoing standoff, with students hoping for swift intervention to restore normalcy on campus.
