RIMS is turning 46; new hope sees as new director comes

Imphal, Sept 13: A onetime premier medical institution of the North East India, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), now drowning in the pool of controversy over appointment of top post, haunted by irregularities and misappropriation of fund somehow sees hope to restore the prestige with the newly appointed Director Dr. A. Shanta along with his team preparing to celebrate the 46th Foundation Day tomorrow.
The Institution was established in 1972 as Regional Meidcal College. It was later rename  Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. The institution caters to the healthcare needs of the country particularly North Eastern Region in the field of imparting undergraduate (MBBS) and Post Graduate (MD/MS/M.Ch.), M. Phil in clinical Psychology, BDS and BSc Nursing courses apart from providing health care facilities.
Living aside , the chaotic situation happened in the administration of the institution during the last few years, the institute have HIV Laboratory (NRL & ICTC), Department of Microbiology, RIMS, Imphal which was one of the 12 National Reference Laboratories (NRL) in India. It has have been granted NABL Accreditation by the National Accreditation Board for testing and Calibration Laboratories in accordance with ISO 15189:2012 in the field of medical testing.
It trains personnel in all important branches of medical specialties including Dental and Nursing. The institute is affiliated to Manipur University, Canchipur and is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,  Government of India.
The institute has so far produced 3249 MBBS doctors and 1583 MD/MS postgraduate doctors as on March 31 2017, in different specialties including super specialty (M.Ch) department of Urology and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. A total of 54 M.Phil in Clinical Psychology have been produced. A total of 29 gold medals and 75 institutional awards are conferred to meritorious students every year. There are 183 BSc. Nursing students and 137 BDS students on roll.
Apart from this a total number of 240 research papers have been published by different faculties and department of RIMS, Imphal during the year 2016-17 in international, national and regional journal of repute. A total of 27 conference, seminar, workshops and CME, etc. were organized by different department of RIMS, Imphal during the same period. The Medical Society of RIMS has organized the 7th MESOCON this year.
The outpatients department (OPD) and impatient department of the institute have been rendering yeomen service to the patients of the region in its 1074 bedded hospital. Moreover, the institute has Medline access from WHO, Telemedicine centre, Regional Medical Library and Advanced Hospital Management System.
