RIMS celebrates World Blood Donor Day 2024

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, commemorated “World Blood Donor Day 2024” with a themed event: “20 Years of Celebrating Giving: Thank You Blood Donors!” held in front of the General OPD at RIMS Hospital, Imphal. A Blood Donation Camp was organised at the Department of Transfusion Medicine, RIMS, Imphal, in connection with the observance.
The program was inaugurated by Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, Imphal, in the presence of Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, Prof. Brogen Singh Akoijam, Dean (Academics), and Prof. A. Barindra Sharma, Head of the Department of Transfusion Medicine, RIMS, Imphal.
During the blood donation camp, Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma himself donated blood, highlighting the significance of blood donation and its impact on saving lives. A total of 50 donors participated in the event, contributing to the noble cause of blood donation.
During his address, Prof. G. Sunil Kumar expressed gratitude to those who selflessly donated blood, emphasizing the invaluable gift of life they bestowed upon others. He highlighted the significance of each drop of blood, noting that a single donation could potentially save three lives, thus highlighting the societal benefits of blood donation. Prof. Sunil Kumar also highlighted the psychological benefits for donors, including reduced stress and a greater sense of belonging within society.
Prof Sunil Kumar also referenced medical research suggesting additional health benefits of blood donation, such as a reduced risk of heart attacks, decreased iron storage, and improved liver health.
Also, Director RIMS highlighted the pivotal role played by the RIMS Blood Bank during the Dengue epidemic, despite facing a shortage of blood donors. Prof. Sunil emphasized the importance of regular blood donation, noting that individuals can donate blood up to three times a year. He urged doctors, nurses, staff, and students of the institute to step forward and donate blood, underscoring the proactive role hospital staff should play in guiding those in need through the blood donation process.
Finally, Prof. Sunil conveyed a reassuring message to the public, stating that donating blood not only carries no loss but also offers numerous benefits to the donor’s body.
The program was attended by R.K. Mecolt Singh, Deputy Director (Admn.), RIMS, Imphal, all Heads of Departments, Principal of Dental College and College of Nursing, RIMS, Imphal, faculties, Chief Nursing Officer i/c, Nursing Officials, students and staff of RIMS, Imphal.
