Report on Curtain Rising Program of Manipuri Poetry Day, 2019

The Department of English, St. Joseph University, Dimapur, observed the Manipuri Poetry Day 2019 today, with a poetry recital program. A curtain raising program of Manipuri Poetry Day, is going to be held on Meragi Purnima ( 13th October, 2019).

The program, titled “Open Mic/Poetry: Manipuri Poetry Day ‘19″ was held between 9-11 AM today at the University Auditorium. The event involved the recitation of original poetry by BA and MA English students of the University.

The event was convened by Manphoa Konyak, President of the Department of English Students’ Association. Around 15 to 20 students from both postgraduate and undergraduate courses recited their original works. The poetry performed was diverse and vibrant – ranging from ruminations on life and death to body-shaming and body politics, from love, disillusionment and depression to the future of Naga youth.

Manipuri Poetry Day is observed to honor the life and career of notable paragons of Manipuri literature, while also paying homage to the rich and unique literary tradition of the region. This year, Third Manipuri Poetry Day is going to be celebrated in Manipur as well as in other states and countries where the Manipuri speaking people reside with the aim of popularizing and exposing Manipuri literature to the broader world.
