Popular singer Sonali Mukherji, currently based in Australia, has extended monetary assistance to acclaimed Manipuri singer Sagolsem Tijendra, who is undergoing treatment for serious health issues. The support was channeled through the group Meitei Eikhoi Punsinsi (MEIPUN), which has also pledged to bear the entire cost of his medical care.
Chief Advisor of MEIPUN, Keke Wahengbam, along with members of the group, visited Tijendra at his residence in Moirangkhom Loklaobung and handed over the aid. Group founder Rakesh Naorem said Tijendra’s health has deteriorated due to low hemoglobin levels, and MEIPUN members have been actively involved in managing his urgent medical needs, including arranging blood transfusions.
Rakesh added that singer Sonali Mukherji’s timely help from abroad had deeply touched Tijendra. “This act of kindness from Sonali is a heartfelt gesture. Even while living overseas, she has shown how much she values our artistes,” he stated.
Describing Tijendra as a legendary voice of Manipur, KEKE Wahengbam urged collective support for artists who have significantly contributed to the state’s cultural heritage. “It is our responsibility to stand by them in their time of need,” he said.
Tijendra expressed sincere gratitude, saying, “Support from Sonali Mukherji and MEIPUN has brought me hope at a time of despair.” He also appealed for greater support from the state’s Art & Culture Department, highlighting the struggles many artists silently endure.
Sonali Mukherji and Sagolsem Tijendra had earlier collaborated on the duet “Chingdol Pakna Pairiba Leichil” from the Manipuri film Leiyee Ama. MEIPUN members, including senior and executive members, were present during the assistance handover.
