Samurailatpam Mahanta Sharma, a noted drummer, music composer, and a key figure associated with Rhythms of Manipur, passed away in the early hours of Sunday following a brief illness. He was widely regarded as one of the prominent rhythm artistes of Manipur’s contemporary music and cultural landscape.
A gold medallist in percussion from the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal, Mahanta Sharma was a versatile artiste who excelled not only as a drummer with Rhythms of Manipur but also as a pung player in Sankirtana performances. He also made significant contributions to several Manipuri digital films, where his musical compositions and rhythmic arrangements earned appreciation.
During his long association with Rhythms of Manipur, Mahanta Sharma performed extensively both within India and abroad. He represented Manipur’s rich musical traditions at international stages in Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and London, helping to carry indigenous rhythms and percussion to a global audience. His absence, colleagues said, leaves a deep void in the organisation and the wider cultural fraternity.
Former Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh expressed deep sorrow over the demise of the artiste. In a social media post, he described Mahanta Sharma as a renowned percussionist and composer who had been associated with Rhythms of Manipur for over two decades and as a multi-talented personality who made notable contributions to Manipuri digital films. He noted that Mahanta Sharma’s enduring efforts in preserving and promoting Manipur’s rich cultural heritage through arts and music would always be remembered, and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the Manipuri cultural community.
Mahanta Sharma’s passing has been widely mourned by artistes, cultural organisations, and admirers across the state, who remembered him for his dedication, humility, and lasting contribution to Manipur’s musical heritage.
