Imphal, Nov 25:
Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has criticized Mizoram MP K Vanlalvena for suggesting “separate administrative units” for the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities to resolve Manipur’s ethnic conflict. Sanajaoba warned Vanlalvena against “crossing the line” and urged him to refrain from interfering in Manipur’s internal issues.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sanajaoba addressed Vanlalvena, a member of the BJP ally Mizo National Front (MNF), stating, “My friend, don’t cross the line. Please confine yourself to issues within your state. Stop interfering in Manipur’s matters. Be a good neighbor.”
Vanlalvena’s remarks, made during an interview with a news agency, included a call for the removal of the N Biren Singh-led government and the imposition of President’s rule in Manipur as the “first and immediate step” to address the ongoing violence. The ethnic clashes, which began in May last year, have claimed over 250 lives and caused widespread displacement.
The Mizoram MP argued that President’s rule would provide an opportunity for the Centre to assess the situation comprehensively and demarcate areas occupied by the Meitei and tribal communities. He advocated for separate administrative units, citing the deep divide between the two groups. “The hill tribes can’t go to the valley, and the Meiteis no longer dare to enter the hill areas,” Vanlalvena said, adding that such a step could pave the way for a lasting solution.
Sanajaoba’s strong response reflects the sensitivity of the issue in Manipur, where the idea of territorial or administrative divisions is often met with resistance. His remarks underline the growing tensions between leaders in the region as efforts continue to address the protracted conflict.
