Imphal, July 9:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee stated that Rahul Gandhi’s visit is a peace initiative aimed at providing emotional support. Speaking to the media, K. Meghachandra Singh, President of the MPCC, noted that Rahul Gandhi’s first visit after becoming the leader of the opposition in Manipur was to Manipur.
K. Meghachandra Singh stated, “In Jiribam, fresh violence erupted at the beginning of last month. Rahul Gandhi visited there, went to relief camps, and met with the inmates belonging to all communities. His visit was a peace initiative. He met with people to support them emotionally, share in their suffering, and encourage them.”
“After Jiribam, he met with the Kuki-Zo community in Churachandpur, delivering the message that only peace is the solution. He met with those suffering and emphasized the need to bring peace and support them,” he added.
He then went to Moirang and met with people in relief camps there. According to K. Meghachandra, “The inmates expressed their sufferings, with one even asking, ‘How long can we stay like this?’ Rahul Gandhi came to give emotional support to the inmates.”
Rahul Gandhi also met with the family of the inmate from the Kwakta relief camp who committed suicide. K. Meghachandra said, “They told him that financial issues led to the person’s suicide.”
Later, he met with the Governor of Manipur, with top-ranking officials also present. Meghachandra reported that Rahul Gandhi asked the governor, “Is Manipur not a part of India? If it is, then actions and initiatives are needed to solve the matter.”
K. Meghachandra Singh thanked those who came out in support of Rahul Gandhi. He also remarked that given Rahul Gandhi’s position as the opposition leader, there was tight security, leading to certain issues regarding the management of press and media personnel’s entry for coverage. Moreover, he clarified that since the aim was not to politicize the matter, Rahul Gandhi did not hold a press conference but only issued a press statement.
