Pukhramba Kajao’s 135th Death Anniversary observed

The 135th death anniversary of Pukhramba Kajao (Phingang) was observed today at the Pukhramba Kajao Memorial Complex in Kangmong Maisnam Leikai, jointly organised by the Pukhramba Kajao Memorial Trust and the Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War-1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur).
The observance began with a Heitha Leitha ritual at the Western Kangla Gate in the morning, followed by the main programme at 11:00 a.m. The event included ceremonial lamp lighting, floral tributes, a moment of silence, and participation of dignitaries and invitees.
Dr. Sapam Ranjan, MLA of Konthoujam Assembly Constituency, attended as chief guest, while Prof. N. Joykumar, Vice-Chancellor of Khongnangthaba University, Ningthemcha Sana Yaiyma, former chairman of UNLF, and Joychandra Konthoujam, chairman of the Justice Committee, were present as guests of honour.
Ng. Tomal, president of the Memorial Trust, and M. Joykumar Luwang, former secretary of the Trust, also attended the programme, which paid tribute to Pukhramba Kajao and other freedom fighters of Manipur.
In his address, Joychandra Konthoujam, expressed concern over continued violence in Manipur for more than three years, including killings, arson, and attacks on civilians. He stated that despite global calls for peace, the situation on the ground reflects a widening gap between peace messaging and reality, and urged urgent attention from authorities and the global community.
He called for unity among all communities in Manipur, urging them to rise above narrow identities and adopt a broader collective outlook. He stressed that divisive thinking must be replaced with a shared vision for stability and progress.
Referring to the Anglo-Manipuri War period, he stated that British forces had underestimated Manipur’s strength during their advance towards Kangla, and faced strong resistance from Manipuri forces.
He urged the present generation to remain united to safeguard the integrity of Manipur, stating that fear of death should not lead people to abandon their homeland. He concluded by calling for lasting peace, unity, and stability without division.
