Bishnupur district witnessed a surge of protests after a woman Meira Paibi was allegedly assaulted with a rifle butt by a police commando. The incident has sparked outrage, leading to a massive demonstration by womenfolk who took to the streets demanding immediate action against the accused personnel.
The protestors called for strict punishment of the police commando involved in the assault, expressing their anger over the growing instances of high-handedness by security forces. The unrest comes in the wake of recent arrests of village volunteers following the Governor’s appeal for the surrender of weapons.
Demonstrators decried the crackdown on village volunteers, arguing that such actions further exacerbate tensions rather than bring about resolution. The women-led protest, which underscores the continuing volatility in Manipur, has once again highlighted the deep-rooted grievances of the people against excessive use of force by security personnel.
As the situation remains tense, authorities are yet to make an official statement regarding the alleged assault. Protestors have vowed to continue their agitation until justice is served.
