Residents of Kwakta today staged a public protest demanding the restoration of the Bank of India Kwakta Branch, which is reportedly set to be shifted from the area from March 2026.
The protest programme was organised by Eleven Star Club Kwakta Cherangpat at Kwakta Cherangpat. Protesters raised slogans demanding that the Bank of India branch be retained at Kwakta and appealed for safeguarding the interests of the local people.
The proposed relocation of the bank branch from Kwakta to Oksongbung in Moirang has triggered concern among residents. Protesters questioned why the branch, which had been functioning in Kwakta, was being shifted despite the alleged approval earlier granted by the Finance Department of the Government of Manipur for continuation of the branch in the area.
The protest was jointly supported by Young Kwakta Organisation and local residents. General Secretary of Eleven Star Club Kwakta Cherangpat, Mohd. Islaoddin, along with several religious leaders and local youths, participated in the demonstration.
Speaking in connection with the protest, General Secretary of Young Kwakta Organisation, Anish Ahamad, stated that democratic and peaceful agitations would continue with the support of civil society organisations, religious leaders and the people of Kwakta until the Bank of India Kwakta Branch is restored in the area.
