Certificates distributed during forest fire prevention programme in Chandel

Certificates were distributed to around 350 participants during a forest fire prevention and eco-tourism training programme held at Lambung Community Hall in Chandel district.
The programme was organised under the initiative of the Divisional Forest Officer, Chandel, in connection with the International Day of Biodiversity observance. Participants from six eco-tourism related training programmes conducted under the RAMP (Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance) scheme received certificates. Cash prizes and certificates were also awarded to winners of a biodiversity-themed painting competition earlier held at Maha Union Higher Secondary School on May 12. Around 50 tree saplings were planted during the programme.
Dr. N. Munal Meitei, Divisional Forest Officer, Chandel, who attended the event as chief guest, said forest fires, indiscriminate destruction of forests, poppy cultivation and excessive extraction of forest resources have contributed to declining rainfall and rising temperatures in Manipur. He stated that jhum cultivation, burning of forest areas for cultivation and careless disposal of cigarette butts are among the major causes of forest fires, adding that nearly 80 percent of forest fire incidents in the state are caused by human activities.
Dr. Munal further said that under Section 26 of the Indian Forest Act, those responsible for causing forest fires can face imprisonment of up to six months along with fines and compensation for damages caused. He noted that around 20 forest staff are managing nearly 1,830 square kilometres of forest area in Chandel district and appealed for public cooperation in protecting forest resources.
N. Deepa, Range Forest Officer, Chandel, said protection of forests is the responsibility of every citizen and referred to Article 51A(g) of the Constitution, which calls upon citizens to protect and improve the natural environment. He appealed to the public to collectively work towards making Chandel a greener district.
L. Nohah, Chief of Lambung Village, presided over the function.
