Imphal, March 10:
Renowned Manipuri filmmaker and actor Priyakanta Laishram has been awarded the Best Director Northeast title at the Prag Cine Awards 2025, held at Sarusajai Stadium, Guwahati on March 9, 2025. Laishram received the prestigious Golden Prag Trophy for his film ONENESS, a groundbreaking work that has set a new precedent for LGBTQ+ representation in Manipuri and Northeast Indian cinema.
The film was nominated in all four major Northeast categories: Best Film Northeast (Producers – Roushil Singla & Priyakanta Laishram and Director – Priyakanta Laishram), Best Director Northeast (Priyakanta Laishram), Best Actor Male Northeast (Priyakanta Laishram), and Best Actor Female Northeast (Maya Choudhury). While it faced stiff competition in other categories, Laishram’s directorial win marks a historic milestone for independent and socially conscious cinema in the region.
Upon receiving the award, Laishram expressed his gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to telling bold and meaningful stories. He stated, ”This award is not just for me, but for every filmmaker who dares to tell stories that challenge societal norms and for every queer individual who has ever felt unseen, unheard and unrepresented. ONENESS is more than just a film—it is a statement, a movement, and a voice for those who have long been silenced. This recognition at Prag Cine Awards is proof that cinema has the power to bring change, and I hope this is just the beginning for queer representation in Northeast Indian cinema.”
ONENESS has been widely regarded as a trailblazing achievement in the history of Manipuri cinema. As the first film from Manipur to focus on same-sex relationships, it has played a pivotal role in challenging stereotypes and opening up conversations about LGBTQ+ identities in a society where such topics remain largely unspoken.
Laishram’s win at Prag Cine Awards 2025 is seen as a turning point for queer representation in regional cinema. While Northeast India has a rich cinematic history, few films have dared to explore themes of gender and sexuality with such depth and authenticity. With ONENESS, Laishram has paved the way for future filmmakers to tell stories that reflect the diverse realities of society.
As Manipuri cinema continues to evolve, ONENESS will be remembered as a film that challenged conventions, sparked dialogue, and redefined storytelling in the region. Priyakanta Laishram’s achievement at Prag Cine Awards serves as an inspiration for aspiring filmmakers who wish to use cinema as a tool for change.
