Consequent upon the demise of Dr. Syed Ahmed, Governor of Manipur, the President of India has appointed V. Shanmuganathan, Governor of Meghalaya, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Manipur, in addition to his own duties.
Shanmuganathan, who hails from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, holds a post-graduate and an M.Phil in Political Science.
Shanmuganathan joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1962. During 1970s, Shanmuganathan worked zealously amongst the youth to sensitize them about the rich Indian heritage and to sanitize them against the separatist and narrow parochial tendencies then prevailing in Tamil Nadu. Later, he was instrumental in organizing activity oriented forums like the Movement for National Unity and Integrity, Tamil Valarchi Mandram (to develop Tamil literature) and Bhakthar Peravai (devotees forum).
V. Shanmuganathan moved to Delhi in the year 2003. At the Bharatiya Janata Party National Headquarters, he has been Prabhari of the Defence and Research & Documentation Cells. Then, he was assigned to the BJP Parliamentary Party office as its Additional Secretary and Prabhari for BJP Overseas Affairs.
He is a prolific writer and authored three books in Tamil, and his English books ‘Karyakarta Nirman’ and ‘The Remarkable Political Movement’ became very popular among patriotic socio-cultural organisations. Besides, he has contributed over 600 articles in leading newspapers and magazines, both in Tamil and English. The Governor designate will be formally sworn in as the Governor of Manipur on 30th September at 4 pm.
