Proscribed group People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) wishes the workers’ community on occasion of May Day. In a press statement issued by LeibakNgakpa Luwang, Assistant Secretary, Publicity and Propaganda, the outfit said that the working class people are the backbone of a society. It said that the international community observes the May Day as “Labour Day” or “International Workers’ Day” or “Labour Movement Day” to encourage the working class community and to commemorate the uprising of the labourers at Chicago on May 1 of 1886 demanding working hours to be not more than 8 hours. The statement further narrated how the workers movement has been tried to suppress by capitalist and how it rises again. It said that the capitalist class hung to death four leaders of the labour class and imprisoned over hundreds. During a meeting of the leaders of the proletarian movement at Paris held on July 14, 1889 had resolved to spread the movement into international level. The movement born in USA reached India in 1923 after a labour observed the day at the Chennai by hoisting a red flag. On May 1, 1927 various labour unions in the country started observing Workers’ Day. For the North Eastern states May Day was observed under the leadership of Hijam Irabot on May 1, 1939. As a part of the observance a rally was staged from Moirangkhom till the residence of the then political agent Jimson of the British government. The PREPAK said that even though Manipur had joined the world community in observing May Day in recognitions to the important of labour class community before 76 years the conditions of the working class still is not improving in the state. It blame the colonial structure of the present day government for its failure to provide jobs to educated youths of the state. While appealing to respect and improve the working class community the PREPAK further wishes the people on the day of the working class people.
