PREPAK Progressive Chairman criticises Indian electoral system, calls for youth consolidation

Longjam Paliba M, Chairman of the proscribed insurgent group PREPAK (Progressive), today launched a sharp critique of India’s electoral system and political leadership in Manipur, while calling on the younger generation to unite for what he described as the future of the indigenous people of the state.
In a statement issued on the occasion of the 16th Progressive Day of the outfit, Longjam Paliba paid tribute to those who had sacrificed their lives for the cause of Manipur and expressed sympathy to families affected by the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in the state.
The PREPAK (Progressive) chairman alleged that democratic institutions in India had failed to ensure the election of competent and people-oriented leaders in Manipur. He claimed that electoral politics in the state had become heavily influenced by money power, with voters and candidates engaging in practices that undermine democratic values.
Questioning the credibility of India’s electoral process, Longjam Paliba alleged manipulation in elections and criticised the functioning of the Election Commission of India and the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He claimed that public distrust in the electoral system had damaged India’s image and described the country’s democratic credentials in disparaging terms.
The insurgent leader further alleged that elections in Manipur had been reduced to a “marketplace” where votes are influenced by financial inducements and promises rather than public service and governance. According to him, elected representatives often fail to remain accountable to their constituents and neglect their responsibilities after securing electoral victories.
Longjam Paliba also accused political leaders in Manipur of acting as proxies of the Indian state and asserted that genuine political change would be impossible without what he termed emancipation from such leadership. He alleged that colonial-era policies and laws had adversely affected the interests of indigenous communities and contributed to the state’s ongoing political and social challenges.
The PREPAK (Progressive) chairman further criticised Manipur’s political class over their handling of recent incidents of violence and security concerns, alleging a lack of seriousness and accountability. He claimed that electoral politics had fostered divisions among communities rather than contributing to development and social cohesion.
Referring to international issues, Longjam Paliba condemned India’s position on the ongoing conflict in Gaza and drew parallels between the situation in the Middle East and the conflict in Manipur. He also reiterated allegations against Kuki armed groups, accusing them of carrying out attacks against indigenous communities, while alleging that the Indian government had failed to address such concerns adequately.
The insurgent leader further claimed that broader geopolitical and strategic interests were influencing developments in Manipur and warned of what he described as threats to the survival and identity of indigenous communities. He urged the younger generation to become politically aware, unite, and work towards safeguarding the future of Manipur.
The PREPAK (Pro) chairman, Longjam Paliba called on the people to remain vigilant against what he described as India’s long-term strategic designs in the region and urged collective action to protect the interests and identity of the state.
