PREPAK extends wishes on International Mother Language Day

People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) extends salute to those who have sacrificed their lives for their mother language and mother land.A press statement released today by Leibak Ngakpa Luwang, Assistant Secretary, Publicity and Propaganda, People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) said that in this fast developing world many languages are becoming endangered language. According to UNESCO, half of the total 6800 languages existing in the world are facing endangered languages. In Manipur also many languages had extinct in the previous half century.In order to prevent from extinction of languages UNESCO started observing International Mother Language Day since 21st February, 2000. The day is observed in recognition of the dedication of Bengali people who had sacrificed their lives to make Bengali Language as the National Language of East Pakistan (Bangladesh).In 1948, when Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan, Urdu was announced as the National Language. However, Bengali patriots reacted against the announcement. Students boycott classes and teachers quit their jobs. On 21 February, 1952 many students organized a rally in Dhaka. Our persons including students died when police opened fire towards the agitators. After the incident the movement of nationalism grew in Bangladesh. As a result of this, Bengali Language became the official language of Pakistan on 29 February, 1952.
