Imphal, Nov 21:
The proscribed People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Heikrujam Ibotombi Khuman, popularly known as Ngamdairen Khuman or “Oja Macha,” who passed away on November 19 at 3:18 PM at the age of 75.
In a statement released by LeibaakNgaakpa Luwang, Charge-de-Affairs and Propaganda Secretary of PREPAK, the organization and its armed wing, the Red Army, paid tribute to their former chairman. The party honored his legacy by flying its flag at half-mast at its Central Headquarters, General Headquarters, Training Centers, Transit Camps, and Base Areas.
Born on August 12, 1949, in Haobam Marak Irom Leikai, Imphal West, Oja Macha was the eldest of five siblings born to Heikrujam Gopalmacha and Nameirakpam Ningol Heikrujam Ongbi Kamini Devi. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Oja Macha completed his primary and high school education at Kha Imphal High School in Haobam Marak Keisham Leikai. He pursued higher education, earning a Master’s degree in Political Science from Manipur University and another in Tribal Administration from Sangai International University, Churachandpur.
He became actively involved in the revolutionary movement for Kangleipak’s independence, first as a member of the Meitei State Committee under the leadership of Wangkhei Tomba and later as part of the Revolutionary Government of Manipur (RGM). His activities led him to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), where he was arrested and detained in various jails, including Maulavi Sub Jail and Sylhet Central Jail, before being handed over to Indian authorities. Oja Macha was subsequently detained in Kailashahar Sub Jail, Agartala Central Jail, and Imphal Central Jail until his release in June 1972 under a general amnesty by the Manipur government.
Oja Macha joined PREPAK on October 9, 1977, and played a pivotal role in shaping the organization. He served as the party’s chairman from July 7, 1982, to March 27, 1983, during which he focused on strengthening ties with neighboring countries like Bangladesh, China, and Nepal to advance the party’s goals. He also worked towards establishing and enhancing the organizational infrastructure, including General Headquarters, Training Centers, and Base Areas for the Red Army.
Under his leadership, the Red Army received rigorous training and ideological education, which reinforced its commitment to PREPAK’s objectives. Oja Macha was widely respected for his ability to navigate complex situations, his dedication to collective decision-making, and his commitment to the revolutionary cause.
PREPAK’s statement emphasized that Oja Macha’s demise leaves a significant void in the organization. Known for his humility, strategic vision, and dedication to serving the people of Kangleipak, he embodied the ideals of the movement. His leadership was marked by efforts to unite communities, foster solidarity, and support the vulnerable.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to carrying forward the vision of Oja Macha, whose contributions remain a source of inspiration for PREPAK and the Red Army.
