Police picks up labourers of CAF & PD

Imphal, July 08:Police picked up 61 labourers of CAF & PD today from the gate of the office where the labourers have been staging sit-in protest as a part of their ongoing cease work strike.Romendrajit Moirangcha, Secretary of CAF & PD Labourer Welfare Association said to the media that there was a proposal made in the last assembly meeting held in Feb, 2014 to increase the wages of the labourers but there is no changes. He added that the labourers of CAF & PD gets minimum wage of Rs. 0.38 for loading a rice bag of 50 kg which is way lesser to those of FCI’ labourers as they get Rs. 3.50 for the same load. The association has been continuing the cease work strike since July 6 demanding the concerned authorities to revise the wages. During their cease work strike the labourers did not allow any transportation of food grains inside the premises of the office. Following the incident Lamphel Police reportedly picked up all the labourers from the site.Director of CAF & PD, Mutum Yaiskul Meitei said to the media that the labourers are not regular employees of the department but hired by a contractor. The department has nothing to do with the ongoing cease work strike because the department cannot fulfil their demands and if required, the department will hire labourers from outside for loading food grains, added Yaiskul.
