PMGKAY & PMUY Schemes: Free Rice, LPG connection for beneficiaries

The District Supply Officer, Department of the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (CAF&PD), Kangpokpi District today distributed free rice to the beneficiaries under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) during a function held today at the multi-purpose Mandap Hall in Kangpokpi District.
Free LPG connection were also provided to the beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) during the function which was held as a part of the celebration of the 75th Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and also as an initiative under the State Government’s 100 days Action plan.
Speaking during the function, Kengoo Zuringla, Deputy Commissioner, Kangpokpi stated that the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (Prime Minister’s Food Security Scheme for the Poor) is food welfare scheme, which as a part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat the main objective is to supply free food grains to migrants and poor.
She urged the people who are ration cardholders and Antyodaya Anna Yojana card holders to avail the foodgrains through the public distribution system. The district administration is committed to ensure that no poor or vulnerable person or household goes hungry, she added.
Vahneilhing Singson, District Supply Officer, CAF&PD, Kangpokpi stated that PMGKAY is a food security welfare scheme under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution which was launched on March 26, 2020 with an intention to reduce the challenges encountered by the poor as a result of disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She said under the scheme, all National Food Security Act (NFSA) beneficiaries are entitled to 5 kgs of free food grain every month. PMGKAY is a unique scheme to combat the effects of the COVID pandemic on the poor of the country, she added.
It may be mentioned that the Centre on March 26, 2022 approved the extension of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) by six months till September 2022, PMGKAY scheme was earlier scheduled to end in March 2022. Under the extended PMGKAY, each beneficiary will get additional 5 kg free ration per person per month in addition to the normal quota of foodgrains under the NFSA.
