Ukhrul, October 26:
Under the befitting theme “From Roots to Radiance,” Pettigrew College, Ukhrul, celebrated its Diamond Jubilee (1965–2025) with grandeur, nostalgia, and heartfelt gratitude to its 25 land donors whose selfless contributions laid the foundation of Manipur’s second oldest and most iconic higher institutions.
The commemorative celebration held at the Multipurpose Hall, Pettigrew College, Meizailung,Ukhrul was a deeply symbolic event that revisited the College’s humble beginnings while reaffirming its commitment to educational excellence and community service.
The celebration began with the unveiling of the Jubilee Monolith by Qr. H.A. Khayaiwo, Awunga (Headman) of Hunphun/Ukhrul, followed by the hoisting of the Jubilee Flag by Qr. Sirawung Ragui, son of the late L. Ragui, the first Chairman of the Pettigrew College Committee.
In his commemorative address, Dr. Rinkahao Horam, Principal of Pettigrew College, reflected on the institution’s long journey through challenges and triumphs. “Due to land issues and lack of funding, neither Silver nor Golden Jubilee was celebrated before. But today, despite many difficulties, we are witnessing a record history — a moment of triumph built on sacrifice and unity,” he stated.
Dr. Horam expressed profound gratitude to the 25 land donors, emphasizing that their unanimous decision to donate land for education remains one of the greatest acts of community generosity in Ukhrul’s history. “Among the 25 landowners, one wished to remain unnamed — a reminder that true service asks for no recognition,” he added solemnly.
Tribute to the Visionaries
The event was graced by distinguished guests including Eno. Ram Muivah, MLA Ukhrul; Eno. Khashim Vashum, MLA Chingai; Ex-MLA Phungyar, Eno. Victor Keishing; and Madam Soso Shaiza, former Member of the National Commission for Women. The gathering also witnessed participation from Qr. Sword Vashum (President, Tangkhul Naga Long), Qr. Ramreichan Keishing (President, Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong), Hunphun Shanao Long, Ukhrul/ Hunphun Katamnao Long, former college principals, retired staff, civil society leaders, and alumni.
A special tribute was paid to the first Principal, Pr. Yangkahao, through the release of a commemorative history and souvenir volume by Qr. P. Rammung, son of the late inaugural Principal.
In his inspiring message, Qr. Ram Muivah Ukhrul- MLA highlighted the significance of investing in education as the cornerstone of national development. Drawing parallels with Singapore, he said,
“Singapore, once a humble fishing village without natural resources, became one of the world’s most advanced nations because its leaders prioritized education. From day one, they allocated 15% of their national budget for education. In India, we invest barely 2% — we must do more.”
Muivah emphasized the need to make Pettigrew College a “cradle of innovation and a centre for excellence” in the hills, urging the government to address infrastructure deficits in Ukhrul’s education sector.
“Human capital is the most valuable resource of any nation. To develop Ukhrul and the Tangkhul region, we must invest not just in education but in skill development — to make Pettigrew College a model institution,” he added.
Gratitude and Blessings
MLA Khashim Vashum in his address described Pettigrew College as “the seed of education for the Tangkhul people.” He extended heartfelt appreciation to the founders and land donors whose generosity had borne fruit for generations. “The College continues to produce distinguished personalities and officers who have served with dignity. It will continue to shine brighter in the days to come,” he said.
Qr. Sword Vashum, Qr. H.A. Khayaiwo, and Qr. Ramreichan Keishing also shared congratulatory remarks, applauding the founders’ far-sightedness and the community’s united spirit that nurtured the institution for six decades.
The celebration further included the flag denouement by Qr. Stephen Hongray, son of Lt. Honrei Hongray, the first Secretary of the Pettigrew College Committee. The special blessing was pronounced by Revd. Zaklei Kaping, Pastor of Phungyo Baptist Church, followed by thanksgiving prayers, choreography, and soulful special songs that evoked a spirit of reverence and joy.
Honouring the Pillars of Generosity
A poignant highlight of the day was the honouring of the 25 land donors — the unseen pillars of Pettigrew College’s legacy. Their selfless contribution six decades ago transformed an idea into a living institution that continues to enlighten and empower generations.
The celebration concluded with a sumptuous Jubilee community feast, symbolizing unity and shared gratitude among the attendees.
As Pettigrew College stands tall on its 60th milestone, the celebration was more than a commemoration — it was a renewal of purpose, a reminder that education remains the most powerful tool to uplift the Tangkhul people and the region. From its humble roots to its radiant present, Pettigrew College continues to shine as a beacon of learning, hope, and transformation in the hills of Ukhrul.
