Peace cannot be achieved through temporary measures: MMWO

The Manipuri Meitei Pangal Welfare Organisation (MMWO) has urged the Central and State Governments to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, stating that the measure is necessary to restore lasting peace and stability in the state.

Addressing to mediapersons today, MMWO Working President Amin Moijingmayum said Manipur has witnessed immense suffering and uncertainty over the past several years, with many innocent lives lost and numerous families affected by the ongoing crisis.

He stated that the conflict could not be resolved through temporary measures and stressed the need to identify the root causes of the unrest and work towards a permanent solution. According to him, sustainable peace can only be achieved through sincere and comprehensive efforts to address the underlying issues.

Amin said every community in Manipur is facing hardships, pointing to rising unemployment among youth, loss of livelihoods, displacement of people from their homes, and increasing psychological distress among the population. He also expressed concern over reports of suicides linked to despair and loss of self-confidence amid the prolonged crisis.

Questioning the prevailing situation in the state, he referred to incidents such as highway blockades, attacks on drivers, extensive deployment of security forces, and continued violence despite heightened security measures. He said these developments raise serious concerns about the factors driving the unrest and violence in the state.

The MMWO leader further stated that the issue of illegal immigration has been discussed in Manipur for many years but alleged that no decisive action has been taken to address it. He maintained that failure to tackle the issue could contribute to further instability and insecurity.

Urging both the Centre and the State Government to take concrete steps towards restoring normalcy, Amin called for the early implementation of the NRC in Manipur and reiterated the organisation’s demand for peace and an end to violence.

“We want peace and no violence in Manipur,” he said.
