Panchayat members demands 100 days wages for MGNREGA; staged rally

Imphal, July 14: Thousands of Manipur State Panchayat Parishad members today staged a mass rally as a part of their ongoing agitation demanding to provide 100 days wages of MGNREGA.  The rally which began from Trau ground, Tiddim Road, proceeded towards Keishampat and later came towards Keishamthong and tried to throng to the Chief Minister’s bungalow by crossing the Keishamthong Bridge. However, a large number of police stopped them at Yaiskul Hiruhanba area preventing them to proceed further. Later, after a brief confrontation police allow some of the representative of the Panchayat members body to submit their memorandum to the Chief Minister.Auditor of Manipur State Panchayat Parishad, R.K. Priyobatta Singh told media persons in Imphal, ‘the body has staged various sit-in-protests starting from block level to district level and since there is no positive response from the government’s side the mass rally has been staged to draw the intention of the government.The demands include to provide100 days wages of MGNREGA, to appoint a permanent BDO, to merge DRDA to Zilla Parishad, to enact three tier systems in the state and to handover the power of devolution to the Panchayat.The rally flagged off from Trau ground, Tiddim Road, Imphal which includes 60 members of Zila Parishad, 161 members of Pradhan, 1500 members of Manipur State Panchayat Parishad apex body.’Placard read as ‘we want permanent BDO’ were demonstrated during the rally.
