A massive surge in sudden pig mortality has gripped Lungthulien village in Pherzawl District, with reports confirming that around 125 pigs have died in the village alone. The rapid spike in deaths has raised serious alarms over a potential African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, triggering immediate community intervention and an emergency field response.
In reaction to the unfolding crisis, the Lungthulien Youth Club (LYC) formally petitioned Anunay Anand, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Pherzawl District, urging the administration to launch an immediate field investigation and provide economic relief to the heavily impacted pig farmers.
Following the youth club’s urgent appeal, a joint field inspection and containment study was swiftly mobilized on the morning of July 18. The joint team—comprising representatives from the Lungthulien Youth Club and personnel from the Veterinary Department—was led by Dr. George Joute (Specialist, Piggery) and Dr. Jalianthang (Veterinary Officer), alongside an Animal Extension Officer (AEO), Field Assistant (FA), and Veterinary Attendants. The team visited affected farms to assess the clinical symptoms, advise on immediate biosecurity measures, and gather crucial data to stem further transmission.
The Lungthulien Youth Club has expressed its deep appreciation to Deputy Commissioner Anunay Anand, IAS, for his remarkably swift executive action, as well as the Veterinary Department for their immediate ground cooperation and professional support during this critical intervention.
The youth club and local piggery have issued a pressing appeal to the State Government of Manipur and the concerned departments to expedite financial compensation for the affected piggery owners, who are facing catastrophic economic losses due to the sudden decimation of their livestock. Local farmers are advised to strictly adhere to the veterinary team’s isolation guidelines while diagnostic confirmations are processed.
