Imphal, Nov 16:
Massive protests broke out across Imphal Valley today, following the gruesome death of six abducted individuals, including women and children, reportedly killed by Kuki militants in Jiribam district. The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with locals condemning the escalating violence and government inaction.
The unrest began after three bodies of the six missing persons were discovered floating in the Barak River near its confluence with the Jiri River along the Manipur-Assam border on Friday night. Officials confirmed the victims included a woman and two children. By today morning, source with Imphal stated that the other three abducted individuals have been killed by the Kuki militants and their dead bodies have been deposited at mortuary of Silchar Medical College.
The news of the killings spread rapidly, sparking outrage across the state. Women-led protests erupted in various parts of the Imphal Valley, with demonstrators blocking key roads and burning tyres to halt vehicular movement. At Khwairamband Ima Market, the largest market in Manipur, women vendors staged a protest rally condemning the killings, despite heavy deployment of security forces.
Protests were also reported from other parts of the valley, including Kwakeithel, Sagolband Tera in Imphal West, Lamlong, Thambalkhong, Kyamgei in Imphal East, and Ningthoukhong in Bishnupur district. Many business establishments and markets shut down in solidarity with the victims, as the valley remained tense.
