An open debate competition was organized by the Jiri College Students Union on the thought-provoking topic, “Social Media has escalated the present crisis in Manipur more than it has helped in conflict resolution.” The event took place at the Jiri College conference hall, attracting significant attention from students and faculty alike.
A total of 14 debaters from various schools in Jiribam participated in the competition, showcasing their eloquence and critical thinking skills. Assistant Professor Dr Arun Kumar Singha served as the speaker for the event, lending his expertise and guidance to the proceedings.
The competition was honored by the presence of esteemed guests, including N Budhachandra Singh, former General Secretary of Jiri College, who served as the Chief Guest. RK Sanachaobi Devi, the Principal of Jiri College, presided over the event as the President, while Mutum Maipaksana Singh, the former Secretary of the Governing Body, attended as the Guest of Honour.
Throughout the competition, debaters passionately articulated their views, presenting compelling arguments both for and against the motion. Those in favor argued that social media has intensified the crisis in Manipur by spreading misinformation and fueling divisive narratives. They highlighted instances where social media platforms have been used to incite violence and escalate tensions among different communities.
Conversely, other debaters defended the role of social media as a tool for conflict resolution. They pointed out that these platforms can facilitate dialogue, promote awareness, and mobilize support for peace initiatives. By sharing personal stories and fostering connections, social media can help bridge divides and encourage understanding among various groups.
The lively exchanges and the depth of analysis demonstrated by the participants underscored the importance of critical discourse in addressing contemporary issues. The event not only provided a platform for young minds to express their opinions but also fostered a spirit of healthy debate and engagement within the community.
As the competition concluded, the judges acknowledged the remarkable performances of all participants, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue on such crucial topics. The Jiri College Students Union expressed gratitude to the guests and attendees for their support, hoping to organize more such events in the future to encourage intellectual growth and community engagement.
