Imphal, Aug 16:
The All Manipur Student Union (AMSU) today question the rationale behind the awarding of Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry for 2020 to one Bheishamayum Debson Singh, SI, CDO, Imphal East as the said police personal has been arrested for trafficking drugs worth more than 3 crores in 2013.
A statement of the students’ body said that on 28 April 2013 Sub-Inspector Beishamayum Debson Singh of Singjamei Bheigyabati Leikai, Imphal East was arrested along with an 11-member team of the Manipur Police commando at Pallel on the way to Moreh carrying Respifed Tablets and pseudoephedrine tablets worth Rs. 3,64,02,000 in international market. An FIR number 62(4)2013 Kakching police station under section 21/29 of the ND&PS Act and 27 Arms Act.
The same person Bheishamayum Debson Singh was listed in serial number 6 of the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry notified vide reference number 27/6/2020-H(CM-MEDAL) dated 12 August 2020.
AMSU questioned on how the Chief Minister who eloquently elaborated on the issue of “War Against Drugs” during his official address on the Independence Day ceremony could confer gallantry award to such a police personnel caught red handed for drug trafficking. AMSU demand a high level inquiry into the antecedents of all the police personnel who were conferred gallantry awards this year and to strip the award if any of them were found involved in heinous crimes like drug trafficking. AMSU hopes and pray that the much flaunted “War Against Drugs” is not turned into “War for Drugs”.
