O. Henry’s election declared as null and void; BJP’s Y. Erabot declared elected

For the 2nd time in the history of Manipur’s political theatre, another MLA who was declared elected from a Manipur Assembly constituency has been declared null and void by the High Court of Manipur today.
The bench of Justice M.V. Muralidaran of the Manipur High Court, in its ruling today declared the election result of Wangkhei Assembly Constituency MLA Okram Henry as null and void. The High Court order also declared Y. Erabot, the petitioner of the case as duly elected as a member of the 15-Wangkhei Assembly Constituency.
Interestingly, Okram Henry Singh, who was elected as Congress MLA in the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly from Wangkhei AC had resigned along with four other Congress MLA and had officially joined the BJP. After their resignation and disqualification of some MLA, 13 seats remain vacant. Due to pending election case in High Court by-election were conducted in 5 Assembly constituencies at which BJP won in 4 seat.
By-election of Wangkhei AC was not held due to the pending election case filed by the BJP candidate Y Erabot in November last year. But Okram Henry was appointed as Minister by the N. Biren Singh government. After expiry of six month and unable to get himself elected as MLA, Okram Henery remain as a mere politician with no legitimate position in the government.
According to report, Y. Erabot will take oath as MLA soon after the notification of the ECI. With the winning of one more BJP MLA , the strength of the BJP is 24 now.
