NSCN commemorates 75th Naga Plebiscite Day at Hebron Headquarters, reaffirms commitment to sovereignty

The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) commemorated the 75th Naga Plebiscite Day with a grand ceremony held at its Council Headquarters Church in Hebron. The event marked a historical moment for the Naga community as it paid tribute to the 1951 plebiscite in which an overwhelming 99.9% of Nagas voted in favor of sovereignty. The solemn gathering was led by NSCN Chairman, Ino Q. Tucco, who delivered a powerful speech emphasizing the significance of the plebiscite and the Naga people’s unwavering stand for self-determination.
In his address, Chairman Q. Tucco proudly reflected on the Naga Declaration of Independence, rooted in the 1929 submission of a memorandum to the Simon Commission by the Naga Club. He highlighted the plebiscite as not just a historical event, but a testament to the Naga people’s collective will and political identity. “The plebiscite is a reflection of our resolute stand to keep alive the God-given history of the Nagas,” Tucco stated, adding that it embodies the community’s democratic spirit and the fight for indigenous rights under international law.
The NSCN Chairman also underscored the strained relationship between the Naga community and the Government of India, accusing the latter of continuous betrayal and suppression.
He cited several political agreements, including the Nine-Point Agreement and the 16-Point Memorandum, as attempts to undermine Naga political aspirations. According to Tucco, these agreements were “craftily prepared showpieces” aimed at weakening the Naga political movement.
He further criticized the Indian government for allegedly orchestrating divisions within the Naga community through agencies and paid collaborators. “The bloodshed and killings we witness today are creations of Indian agencies using treacherous Nagas under their payroll,” Tucco charged, calling for unity among Nagas to resist external manipulation.
A significant portion of his speech was dedicated to defending the historic Framework Agreement signed on August 3, 2015. The agreement, Tucco noted, was a recognition of the “unique history of the Nagas,” reaffirming their right to sovereignty. He expressed strong disapproval of the “common draft” proposed under the Indian Constitution, describing it as a plot to undermine the Framework Agreement. “We are no novices to the divisive politics planted by the Indian agency,” he asserted, vowing that NSCN would not accept any solution that compromised the sanctity of the 2015 agreement.
As the commemoration drew to a close, Chairman Tucco urged Nagas to honor the legacy of their forefathers who led the freedom movement with vision and sacrifice. “We stand for a sovereign independent nation, as declared on August 14, 1947, and reaffirmed by the plebiscite with 99.9% in favor,” he proclaimed, calling for collective resilience to uphold Naga history and identity.
The ceremony concluded with prayers and a pledge to continue the struggle for Naga sovereignty, symbolizing the community’s enduring spirit and commitment to self-determination.
