NRFM calls General Strike on August 15

The National Revolutionary Front Manipur (NRFM) has called a general strike across Manipur on August 15 from 1 am to 5 pm, opposing the celebration of India’s Independence Day.

In a statement, NRFM Information and Publicity Secretary, Central Headquarters, Sanajaoba Meitel, urged people across the State to observe the strike. Essential services, including fire and emergency services, medical and healthcare services, and the media, have been exempted from the purview of the strike.

The outfit alleged that Manipur’s political status and territorial integrity have been undermined by successive policies of the Government of India and claimed that the people of Manipur have faced prolonged political and economic exploitation.

Questioning the observance of August 15 as Independence Day in Manipur, the NRFM said the day should instead be observed as a reminder of what it described as the unresolved political status of Manipur.
