Imphal, Oct 10: North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) and All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) organised North East Consultation on Human Rights, soliciting people’s opinion on Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 today at Amity Hall, Adimjati Shiksha Ashram, Imphal.
Attending the consultation program as Chief Guest, Former Chief Minister of Manipur, Koijam Radhabinod said that AFSPA is a very powerful act which is highly dangerous like an atomic bomb and can cause various inhuman activities. He further said that imposing the draconian Act in some parts of the country including, North East, J & K and other disturbed areas is an act of discrimination. Radhabinod added that AFSPA can not reduce insurgency but it only helps in increasing the activity of insurgents. He further said due to this inhuman act many unemployed youths have started joining insurgent groups in North East region. AFSPA cannot fight against insurgency but everyone from all sectors including the politicians and social leaders must get involved in fighting against them, added the former Minister.
Samuel B. Jyrwa, Chairman, NESO, Yambem Laba, Former member, Manipur State Human Rights Commission and Potsangbam Sonamani, President, Manipur Association North East India attended the consultation program as President and Guests of Honour respectively.
