Imphal, Sept 7:
Following the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity’s (COCOMI) declaration of a public emergency after a rocket bomb attack in Trogloabi, Bishnupur district, life across Manipur has been disrupted. The attack, which occurred yesterday, has intensified the sense of insecurity among civilians, leading to widespread closures and minimal public activity.
In Imphal East and Imphal West districts, major commercial hubs such as Thangal Bazar, Paona Bazar, Ima Keithel, Singjamei, and Khurai Bazar saw shops, vendors, and business establishments shut down. Similar closures were reported in other districts, including Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur, further halting economic activities across the state.
Government offices reported minimal attendance, as employees stayed home amid rising tensions. Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, have also closed their doors. Cinema halls and private establishments have followed suit, with no passenger services operating across the region. The declaration has effectively frozen daily life for thousands of residents, who remain cautious amid fears of further violence.
The rocket bomb attack that led to COCOMI’s emergency declaration targeted civilian areas in Trogloabi, exacerbating the ongoing crisis in Manipur. The attack left multiple individuals injured, deepening concerns about the deteriorating security situation.
Local authorities have urged residents to remain calm and stay indoors as the situation remains volatile. Security forces are on high alert, with additional personnel deployed to critical areas. However, many in the state express frustration over the perceived lack of effective measures to curb the violence.
The public emergency comes as tensions between ethnic groups in Manipur continue to rise, with the government facing increasing pressure to restore law and order in the region.
