Imphal, Mar 15:
Normal life has been disrupted due to the ongoing 48-hour general strike in Manipur’s valley region. The general strike, called by 12 civil society organizations (CSOs) in protest against the arrests of three Pambei-led UNLF cadres, has led to the closure of shops in areas such as Paona and Thangal Bazar, as well as in the wider Imphal area. Passenger service transporters stayed off the road and most business sectors remained shut during the 48 hours general strike.
Many women have taken to the streets to stage sit-in protests at various locations in Imphal, further affecting normal economic activities in the state.
Despite the strike, there has been some movement of vehicles, particularly due to the ongoing High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exams and other examinations taking place at Manipur University. Prior to the strike, the organizations who called the general strike had announced that essential services would be exempted from the strike’s effects.
