Noney bans Amur Falcon hunting, orders Air Gun surrender

The Noney district administration has banned hunting, capturing, killing and selling wildlife across the district to protect migratory birds, including the Amur Falcon, locally known as “Akhualpuina”, during their roosting season.

The prohibitory order was issued by District Magistrate Vidyamari Sridhar on October 22, following a request from the Divisional Forest Officer, Noney Forest Division, for preventive measures against the hunting of migratory birds and the temporary surrender of air guns.

The order states that hunting or possessing protected migratory birds, including the Amur Falcon (Falco amurensis), attracts penal action under Sections 50 and 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

All air-gun owners in Noney district have been directed to deposit their weapons with their respective village authorities until further orders or until the birds leave their roosting areas.

Village authorities in Longmai, Khumji, Rangkhung, Luangchum, Taobam, Khongsang, Rengpang, Nungba, Kambiron, Guangram, Nagaching, Kabui-khullen, Puichi, Bakwa, Hoachong and other areas have been instructed to maintain custody of the deposited air guns and submit collection reports to the Deputy Commissioner’s office by November 10.

The Superintendent of Police, Noney, and the Divisional Forest Officer have been directed to ensure compliance and prevent illegal hunting. Violators will face legal action under applicable laws.

The measure aims to safeguard the migratory birds during their seasonal stay in the district.
