Internally displaced women (IDP Ningols) currently taking shelter at the Relief Camp of Lamding Higher Secondary School in Thoubal District celebrated Ningol Chakouba today at Lamding Ikop Ningthou’s temple.
The celebration was organised by the Lamding WhatsApp Group, an association of residents of Lamding Leikai. MLA Okram Surjakumar of Khangabok Assembly Constituency, his wife Dr. Micky Hijam, S. Chaoba Singh of the Lamding WhatsApp Group; and Md. Hibjur Rahaman, Zilla Parishad Member of Sangaiyumpham attended as dignitaries on the occasion.
Displaced women from Moreh and Churachandpur, who have been staying in the relief camp since the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023, joined together to observe the festival. They shared traditional meals and heartfelt moments that reflected both joy and longing for home. MLA Surjakumar and members of the Lamding WhatsApp Group presented gifts and essential items to the women, making the event warm and memorable.
Speaking at the occasion, MLA Okram Surjakumar said that peace and harmony will truly return to Manipur only when the internally displaced persons (IDPs) are able to go back to their respective homes. He added that as many displaced families have already begun returning safely, Manipur is gradually moving toward lasting peace. The MLA expressed hope that by the next Ningol Chakouba, many mothers and sisters now living in relief camps will be able to celebrate the festival in their own homes with their families.
The programme was also attended by Councillor Y. Ibopishak of Wangjing Lamding Municipal Council, social worker Laishram Subash, Y. Basan, President of LWG S. Ojit, Treasurer L. Romen, Advisor Ngangom Joy, and K. Shyama.
