NIA gives final verdict on 15 convicts in NC Hills scam

Guwahati, May 23: A special NIA court here declared the quantum of punishment on Tuesday afternoon on NC Hill scam’s 15 convicts.
JuwalGarlosa, NiranjanHojai and MohitHojai have been sentenced to lifetime imprisonment. R H Khan, ParthaWaris, Jibangsu Pal, FazendraHojai ,DebasisBattacharya and JayantaGhosh have been awarded 10 years jail term. On the other hand, Babul Kemprai, SandipGhosh and KarunaSaikia have been sentenced to eight years in prison.
The special court found all the accused guilty and convicted in the Rs 1000 crore scam in NC Hill. The development is seen as ‘big blow’ for militants and government officers indulging in ‘unethical practices.’
Yesterday, the  NIA court  convicted  15 people for embezzling  a huge amount of money meant for development in DimaHasao district a couple of years back much to the benefit of a local rebel group.
The court announced the quantum of punishment on Tuesday as the arguments concluded on Monday.
In its first two cases bearing No RC 01&02/2009/NIA/DLI, registered a couple of weeks after it was set up, the court convicted DimaHalamDaoga-Jewel (DHD-J) rebels NiranjanHojai, JuelGarlosa, the then chief executive member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council MohetHojai, his associate GolonDaulagapu, government officers RH Khan, KarunaSaikia, Jibangsu Paul apart from two contractors namely PhajendraHojai and JayantaGhose.
The court has further convicted Hawala operator Malsamwkimi and Vanlalchana who is an arms smuggler.
During investigation, more than one crore in cash along with a huge cache of arms and ammunitions were seized in two different checkings.
Later, the DHD-J rebels came back to the national mainstream and joined political parties. R H Khan, the social welfare department officer is still languishing in jail.
