NH-202 under siege; TKS issues 24-hour ultimatum, slams Government over abduction of 21 passengers and collapse of public safety

Ukhrul, March 18:
The Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) has expressed strong resentment and deep dissatisfaction over the continued disruption and blockade of the NH-202 Imphal-Ukhrul Road, terming the situation as “completely unacceptable” and a direct threat to the survival of the people dependent on the vital lifeline.
In a strongly worded statement, TKS condemned the recent abduction of 21 passengers along the Imphal–Ukhrul stretch of the highway, an incident that has sent shockwaves across the region.
The organisation alleged that the abduction reportedly occurred in the presence of Central Security Forces, raising serious questions over the credibility and effectiveness of forces entrusted with maintaining law and order.
The incident has triggered widespread fear, anger, and mistrust among the public. TKS stated that the apparent failure to safeguard innocent civilians on such a crucial route has significantly eroded public confidence, further deepening the sense of insecurity among the people.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, TKS underscored that the NH-202 Imphal–Ukhrul Road serves as the only lifeline for over two lakh residents in the region. The continued disturbance and obstruction of this route have severely disrupted daily life, affecting students, patients, traders, government employees, and ordinary commuters who rely on the road for access to education, healthcare, livelihood, and essential commodities.
The organisation also questioned the circumstances that have led to the present crisis, pointing out that the local community, known for its humanitarian values, had extended shelter and compassion to others in times of need. However, it asserted that such goodwill must not be exploited to the detriment of the host community, warning that continued aggression under such conditions is unacceptable.
In response to the escalating crisis, TKS has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Government of Manipur, demanding a clear, credible, and unequivocal assurance of safety for all travelers along the highway.
The organisation called for immediate and visible measures to restore safe and unhindered movement, emphasizing that the government cannot afford to remain silent while the lives of its citizens are at risk.
TKS cautioned that failure to respond within the stipulated timeframe would compel the public to resort to democratic actions to safeguard their rights and security. It further warned that any untoward consequences arising from continued inaction would rest solely on the State Government.
Additionally, the organisation urged elected representatives of the region to break their silence and take decisive steps to protect the people. It stressed that inaction or ambiguity at such a critical juncture would not be tolerated by the public.
Calling for unity and vigilance, TKS appealed to the general public to remain prepared for democratic mobilisation aimed at restoring peace, justice, and the safe functioning of the highway.
“The safety, dignity, and rights of our people cannot and will not be compromised,” the statement asserted, reflecting the growing public outrage and urgency surrounding the crisis.
