The Northeast Vegetable Farmers, Workers and Traders Welfare Union (NEVFW&TWU) observed its first foundation day at the Manipur Press Club today, calling for measures to regulate the rising prices of essential vegetables and ensure better market access for local farmers and traders.
Speaking as the chief guest, retired IAS officer Harekrishna Mangshatabam said the continued influx of vegetables from outside the state despite the availability of suitable agricultural produce within Manipur was affecting local farmers and traders. He said the dependence on outside supplies was contributing to price-related difficulties and called for collective efforts to address the issue.
Mangshatabam also suggested reviewing taxes collected on highways from vehicles transporting vegetables into the state. He said reducing such taxes could help lower the prices of vegetables to some extent. He further called for measures to facilitate the early entry of locally produced vegetables and other agricultural products to counter disruptions caused by economic blockades.
NEVFW&TWU general secretary Oinam (O) Ranjita said the union was formed a year ago with the objective of ensuring better prices for vegetables and agricultural produce brought into Manipur from neighbouring northeastern states and other parts of the country.
She said the union had approached the Director General of Police, Manipur, seeking measures to check the multiple taxes reportedly collected on highways. According to her, the DGP’s office had responded positively and taken up necessary measures.
The union has also expanded its activities beyond Manipur, with a branch opened in Cachar district of Assam. Plans are also underway to establish branches in Guwahati and Shillong, she said.
The programme was presided over by NEVFW&TWU president Ningthoujam Chitrangada Devi. Justice Committee chairman Joychandra Konthoujam attended as the special guest, while COCOMI Women Wing convenor Wahengbam Luwang Leima and NEVFW&TWU adviser Nongmaithem Sadananda Meitei attended as guests of honour.
