A village-level Mithun and cattle vaccination and ear-tagging camp was held today at Louphong Village in Kamjong District under the initiative of Dr. Atom Sunil Singh, Principal Investigator of the project “Mithun Conservation & Breeding Centre in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland & Manipur.” The programme was implemented by the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCRMS), Shillong, in collaboration with The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, and funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC), Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
Vaccination and ear-tagging were carried out by Haorongbam Jiban, Field Assistant, Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Imphal East, in the presence of NERCRMS representative Ch. Bungbungcha Meitei, Louphong Village Authority headman Mingthing Mung, and villagers.
Mithun, locally known as Sandang, had disappeared from Louphong after the Naga–Kuki conflict of the 1990s, leaving the village without a single animal for many years. The NEC-supported conservation project seeks to restore the species, protect it from extinction, and preserve its cultural and livelihood significance among tribal communities.
Under the initiative, 25 Mithun have been provided to each project centre at Louphong, Kabui Khullen and Machi in Manipur, as well as Mirem Village in Arunachal Pradesh and Jalukie Village in Nagaland.
