Naga Women’s Union condemns attacks on villages, alleges rights violations

Special Correspondent
Ukhrul/Senapati, April 9:
The Naga Women’s Union has expressed serious concern over a series of alleged attacks on Naga villages in Ukhrul and Senapati districts, claiming targeted aggression by Kuki militants, including those under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement, and questioning the response of both the State and Central governments.
In a press statement, the Union reported that villages including Litan, Sinakeithei, S. Laho (Sharkaphung) and Thoyee in Ukhrul district, as well as Ireng, K. Lungwiram, Waphon Inthan and Thonglang in Senapati district, have come under repeated armed attacks. It alleged that the incidents appear to be part of a pattern aimed at advancing political claims in areas it described as Naga homeland.
The Union stated that the sequence of incidents suggests a coordinated pattern of violence despite the presence of central security forces in the state. It expressed dissatisfaction over what it termed an indifferent response from the authorities, stating that heavy deployment has failed to provide adequate protection to civilians.
The organisation further alleged that, instead of ensuring the safety of villagers, security forces have used excessive force against civilians, particularly women. It claimed that the presence of armed personnel in civilian areas has contributed to fear, insecurity and serious human rights concerns.
Highlighting the traditional role of Naga women as custodians and peacekeepers, the Union stated that women engaged in maintaining peace are now facing intimidation and physical assault. It referred to an alleged incident on April 7 at S. Laho (Leingangching), where women were reportedly assaulted, describing the incident as disturbing and indicative of a growing pattern.
The Union stated that the use of disproportionate force against civilians, especially women, violates basic human rights and risks escalating tensions while eroding trust between communities and security agencies. It also stressed that traditional practices such as Meira, symbolising women-led peacekeeping, should be respected.
Calling for accountability, the Naga Women’s Union urged both the State and Central governments to take immediate action against those allegedly involved and to ensure discipline among security personnel. It maintained that security forces must act impartially and prioritise the protection of civilians.
The Union also called on the authorities to address the situation with a broader historical and political understanding and adopt measures to prevent further escalation. Reaffirming its commitment to peace and justice, it urged the governments to prioritise civilian safety, uphold human rights and restore public confidence in the affected areas.
