In an unpredicted strike launched by Manipur University Students Union (MUSU), students of Manipur University vandalized furniture and boycotted classes demanding to develop the roads inside the campus today morning.
Speaking to Imphal Times, office bearers of MUSU said that development works for around 10 connecting roads inside the campus have been stopped incomplete without proper blacktopping.
The road construction works were done in connection with the visit of the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee to attend the University’s convocation held on April 29, 2014. However, some roads were left without any renovation even after the completion of convocation as the university authority failed to pay due to the construction company-LS Construction.
In connection with this issue, MUSU had submitted a charter of demand and pressed the authority to release the remaining funds and to finish the work in time as soon as possible.
While contacted the LS Construction, officials of the company said that it could not start work without payment, however if the university authority paid the outstanding dues they will resume the work.
During a meeting held on Jan 18, 2014 at the chamber of Prof H Nandakumar Sarma, Vice-Chancellor, he assured to release all the remaining funds and to finish blacktopping of roads within the month of January 2014.
According to report, the Vice-Chancellor even instructed University’s Finance Officer, K Jiban to sanction the required amount. However, as the Finance Officer failed to sanction the amount students of the varsity launched the strike and vandalized the front gate and furniture of boys hostel number 1 and 2. The students also boycotted classes and shut down the university’s library.
